@Jeremy - Could you speak to what criteria went into deciding which images from these web stories made it into the deluxe print edition? I see one of the images on this page made it, and the other didn't.

Good question. I knew I couldn't include every image I had generated, because printing full-color on 70-pound paper gets a bit expensive, and the page count was already painfully long.

My original goal was 40 images (roughly 2 for every 3 chapters), but it ended up being roughly 1 per chapter. Most of the first ~20 chapters had several images per chapter, so I had to cut quite a few.

My main criteria were (1) which pictures looked the coolest, (2) which most accurately represented the vision in my head, (3) how consistent the character portrayals were with other pictures of those characters, and (4) were there other pictures covering similar subject matter (e.g. were there other pictures of that character elsewhere).

Another big factor was, as I formatted the deluxe copy, if I could squeeze an image onto part of a page without pushing that chapter's text onto an additional page.

A final factor was that if I needed a picture to appear side-by-side a particular paragraph, and that paragraph was on a right-hand side, then I needed to insert a picture in an earlier chapter to push that text onto a left-hand side.

The part where Durrin names his horse is perhaps the first likable and endearing thing Durrin does in this story. (But be aware, Durrin, once you name something, it could follow you around forever!)

I hate to break it to you, Raggedy Ruby, but you and your rider are soon going to be parted by a band of raggedy pirates.

Durrin showed showed wisdom and compassion by not killing the sergeant, and it paid off for him. It saved his life! The spear he acquired and retained from the sergeant became the means of creating the inferno that halted the wyvern's attack. I hope to see more wisdom like this in Durrin's future.

One way that Durrin shines is his ability to stay focused on his main goal. The sixth Kymar scroll must be amazing for Durrin to care so much about it. The visualization of his goal acts as a powerful source of momentum. Surely, someone so passionate will succeed!

Yes. It is Durrin's capability and passion that Volthorn fears so much. Which leads to the question---what more will Durrin's superiors in Calamar require of him before he can lay his hands on that scroll? (Foreshadowing to chapter 10 :)

Poor Raggedy Ruby must have been scared out of her wits by the wyvern. She went from having a brown coat of fur at the beginning of the chapter to a pure white coat of fur by the end!

Nay, friends, I was not scared. I was transcended. Think of when Gandalf the Gray turned white after facing the balrog. Now that's a horse of a different color!

I guess I must rein in my comment. I stand corrected.

(P.S. Who's Gandalf? And what's a balrog?)

Durrin's cloak changed colors, too. I guess wyverns strike fear in the hearts of even inanimate objects!

But what if inanimate objects don't have hearts?

Then wyverns strike fear in their weave? Their thread-count? Their seams?

I'm impressed you know so much about sewing terminology, O cousin-of-mine-who-quit-one-hour-into-their-weaver-apprenticeship

You learn a lot about how to talk about cloth when you're selling a lot of it second-hand on the black market.

I am pointedly not going to ask for clarification on what activities you are engaged in by which you procurer such second-hand cloth.
